SAD SACK
Any World War II veteran can tell you what a "sad sack" was, and cartoonist George Baker captured the essence of that particular variety of the put-upon GI in his popular drawings for Yank Magazine. But the war ended -- and like millions of other demobilized dogfaces, the Sack came home hoping for peace and quiet at last. But when they call you "the Sad Sack," well, you can expect that things won't quite work out as you expect. Character actor Herb Vigran, with a voice like a bag of old laundry, perfectly portrayed Baker's run-down ex-soldier as he attempts to readjust to civilian life - along with his cheesy roommate Fenwick, as portrayed in the braying Jim Backus.
