GRAND CENTRAL STATION
They might not remember the stories -- but anyone who listened to radio in the 1940s remembers the format, the mile-a-minute chugging of the announcer's voice following a speeding train on its charging journey into Grand Central Station. That "crossroads of a million private lives" was a perfect jumping-off point for any story producer Himan Brown wanted to tell -- from melodrama to comedy to romance, and usually a combination of all three. The program was Brown's first big network hit, enjoying a fourteen-year run, and proved his gift for distinctive packaging of well-crafted anthology tales.
