FOUR STAR PLAYHOUSE
Postwar radio wasn't all private eyes, sitcoms, and giveaway shows -- there were plenty of ambitious new dramatic anthologies. The most ambitious, perhaps, was Four Star Playhouse. A high-budget series featuring a rotating cast of Hollywood favorites in well-crafted half-hour weekly dramas, the Playhouse was intended as a potent response to the poaching by CBS of much of NBC's comedy lineup. With Fred MacMurray, Rosalind Russell, Robert Cummings and Loretta Young headlining, anticipation ran high. The program kicked off in the summer of 1949 without a sponsor -- and despite a great deal of promotional ballyhoo, it never attracted one. This left NBC with little choice but to drop the series after just three rotations of the Four Stars.
