FORECAST
When popular programs went off the air for the summer, and sponsors let their contracts slide, networks had to scramble to fill up the unsold time. This meant an opportunity for new personalities, new concepts, new program ideas. In the summers of 1940 and 1941, CBS gave listeners a whole series of new ideas, in the unique on-air audition series Forecast. Slotted into a Monday night time slot (vacated for the season by the Lux Radio Theatre), Forecast productions ran the gamut from heavy drama to music to variety to situation comedy...from a proposed showcase for Alfred Hitchcock to the adventures of Jeeves and Bertie Wooster, to an star-studded all-African-American musical revue...to, most memorably, a visit to a dumpy Third Avenue dive called Duffy's Tavern.
