FLASH GORDON
Buck Rogers might have been the first spacefaring hero of the funnypapers, but Flash Gordon was by far the most elegant -- and his wide appeal on page two of every Sunday's new issue of "Puck the Comic Weekly" guaranteed that he'd follow Buck to radio. In 1935 the Hearst Corporation brought Flash, Dale Arden, and Dr. Zarkov to the air in their relentless battle against Ming the Merciless of the planet Mongo in a weekly adventure that closely followed the published strip's continuity, and which featured deep-voiced Gale Gordon as the handsome blond spaceman. The Interplanetary Adventures of Flash Gordon perfectly captured the dashing flavor of Alex Raymond's storytelling, and ran for six months as a weekly quarter-hour. A second series began that fall as a daily feature, carrying Flash and his friends off to even greater excitement.
