Everything for the Boys
Suave, debonair Ronald Colman and short, sweatshirt-clad Arch Oboler might seem like a radio Odd Couple, but their collaboration on Everything For the Boys brought wartime listeners an interesting mix of propaganda, message drama, and GI public relations that was quite unlike any other contemporary program. The series offered material requested by American servicemen, including digest-size adaptations of popular films, plays, and novels. There were occasional dips into Oboler's well of original material, along with direct shortwave pickups (allowing Colman to interview actual American service personnel overseas). It was a lot to pack into a weekly half hour, but the distinctive mix of personalities and styles made for worthwhile, morale-boosting listening.
