Don Winslow of the Navy
Based on the comic strip by Commander F. V. Martinek, Don Winslow of the Navy brought tales of pre-WWII espionage and intrigue to radio's afternoon kiddie block. Commander Winslow himself was a stalwart authority figure, an officer in Naval Intelligence, who devoted himself to the pursuit of a scheming international criminal who called himself "The Scorpion." This villainís origin remained a mystery -- but he was clearly allied with Hostile Foreign Powers, seeking to do ill to United States interests. Despite the international saber-rattling, though, the stories themselves had a distinctly non-violent bent. Winslow offered himself as an advocate of peace, while offering his young followers membership in the official Don Winslow Squadron of Peace Club, a gesture which earned the program praise from parents and critics alike.
