Dear John
Irene Rich enjoyed a long and successful career in romantic films (both silent and talking) before taking to radio in the early 1930s for a series of Sunday night dramas (sponsored by Welch's Grape Juice). The program offered an unusual fifteen-minute format emphasizing limited-run serials. The best remembered of these was "Dear John." Presented in chapters and volumes, the series featured Rich as Faith Chandler, a wealthy but rather lonely woman relating her weekly experiences with her friends and family in letters to her "Dear John." The storyline ran for three and a half years, with Rich supported by Ray Montgomery, Betty Moran, Lois Collier, Norman Field, Gerald Mohr, Tom Collins, and Howard Duff -- but "John" himself was never given voice, remaining an off-mic presence throughout the run.
